06.13.2008.HULK.SMASHED!
Saw the mid-night screening of THE INCREDIBLE HULK last night with Burgundy and some good buddies.
I went in with HIGH expectations honestly. Love the trailers. Love Edward Norton. I also loved IRON MAN (saw it twice) which got me excited about this new HULK movie. I was not disappointed. My expectations were exceeded.
If you saw the 2003 snore fest titled HULK, toss it to the side and bury it. THE INCREDIBLE HULK trumps it in every way. An important aspect about the Hulk is you have to care about Bruce Banner as much as you want to see Hulk smash things up. Edward Norton does a fantastic job at it. Where in Ang Lees version Eric Bana was as dull as the film. Ok, no more comparison to that film anymore...a Hulk film needs action, drama and a tiny bit of romance-director Louis Leterrier (The Transporter 2) delivers all.
THE INCREDIBLE HULK starts out with Bruce Banner in hiding trying to find a cure to his Hulk problem while learning to control his anger. Soon he encounters General "Thunderbolt" Ross ( WIlliam Hurt, who nails it) who pretty much wants to capture Bruce, as his body is"...property of the United States Army." This takes Bruce back to America where he Hulks out a whole lot more, has a potential adversary in a military superstar Emil Blonsky (Tim Roth) who after testing similar to Bruce Banner, becomes an abomination of his own.
There is some cool background things you may look over if you do not pay attention. There is talk of a Super Soldier serum that they Army is trying to replicate since WW2 (which is what Banner was working on when he got Gamma Radiated), which is what made Captain America. Marvel is being really clever at building towards an AVENGERS film. There is a clever cameo by Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr) at the end which paints the picture just a bit more about that team up.
So if you have plans to see a great movie this weekend, go see THE INCREDIBLE HULK. Avoid The Happening. bad, bad reviews...
